The KBO Breeze is a solid e-bike at a great price (CleanTechnica Review)


KBO Bikes came out last year with the goal of delivering affordable, fully functional e-bikes and after spending a few weeks with the Breeze it is clear that we have succeeded.

The KBO Breeze is a commuter bike that comes factory-fitted with useful features, accessories and a range that you would expect from a much more expensive bike. For just $ 1,399, the Breeze is commuter-geared, with road-friendly 27.5 “x 2.4” puncture-proof Panasonic tires that add a bit of bulk to take the edge off rough roads.

The plush saddle is a nice mix of weight and comfort that makes it comfortable enough to pedal while still offering nice gel padding. An integrated handle was a nice addition to the saddle, which made it easier to put the bike on a luggage rack or in the back of a truck.

The KBO Breeze offers a range of 30 to 55 miles per charge and that’s an impressive number for an e-bike that costs just $ 1,399. We were skeptical, but put it to the test and found that it not only delivers the expected range, but regularly exceeds it. This is largely due to the efficient 500-watt motor and the smooth-running tires.

500 watt motors are emerging as the sweet spot for motors as they deliver enough power to tackle steeper inclines while providing incremental range over less efficient 750 watt motors. The Breeze’s rear hub motor can deliver an average of 500 watts with a peak output of 800 watts. A rotary throttle on the right handle makes it easy to call up a little more power via the assistance provided by the pedal assistance, and provides the full 800 watts of power for short impacts.

The 16 Ah, 768 Wh Reention Dorado + battery was built with Samsung cells and is larger than the standard 14 Ah, 672 Wh battery found on most inexpensive e-bikes. Since it is removable, you can also take a second battery with you for even longer tours, if that’s your thing. The Breeze’s battery is unique in that it has its own power switch, so you need to turn the battery on before you can turn the bike on from the handlebars. It’s a simple task, but worth remembering when it’s time to drive.

The people at KBO Bikes also offer the option of buying a second battery to double the effective range of the bike for even longer tours. The ability to travel 60 to 110 miles without stopping for a few hours to recharge opens up many new possibilities. Adding a second battery for less than $ 2,000 makes multi-day bike rides, riding even further, and using less energy over shorter distances exciting opportunities. Pro tip: don’t forget to bring the keys with you when riding with multiple batteries as they are required to remove one of the two batteries from the bike in order to swap out a new one.

At the rear, a luggage rack adds useful functionality to the bike and enables the use of a luggage rack bag, panniers or a basket. We attached a basket to the rack and had a lot of fun dragging our little puppy around town on family outings. Including a luggage rack with the bike makes the Breeze a complete package without having to buy the bike and a long line of accessories just to get started.

A set of included aluminum fenders made it a breeze to ride the bike anywhere, anywhere without worrying about the weather. Metal fenders can be a little tricky to adjust and we had to adjust the front fenders a bit to make them fit perfectly.

The Breeze has integrated LED front and rear lights, which both offer a better view of the road in front of you and make the bike more visible to cars after dark. The front lights won’t illuminate the darkest streets, but together they give cars and other cyclists meaningful visibility in low light.

Assembling the Breeze wasn’t quite as straightforward as some of the other bikes we’ve put together, but we were still able to get it from the box to the road in about an hour. That’s a bit above average, but still a pretty easy assembly. As always, if you are not comfortable removing a rear tire from a bike, I would recommend having the bike assembled by a professional for the best experience. If you arrange this in advance, you can probably even have the bike delivered direct to a local bike shop so you don’t have to mess with the nearly 80-pound oversized crate.

Overall, the Breeze is an affordable e-bike that raises the bar in some key areas. The range on a single battery is significantly longer than most other e-bikes for a comparable price, and the option of adding a second battery is a nice touch. The included lights, luggage racks and mudguards make it easy to use the Breeze for meaningful tasks right out of the box without having to buy accessories, while also providing a solid platform on which a pushpit, panniers and more can easily be attached.
