Harley-Davidson’s e-bike brand Serial 1 takes a euro trip as the electric two-wheelers drive across the continent.
The expansion follows Serial 1’s debut late last year when we got the chance to take the first ride on the premium electric bikes.
Now the e-bikes will appear at Harley-Davidson dealers across Europe this summer.
Countries welcoming the motorcycle manufacturer’s e-bike brand include Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Great Britain.
The European rollout is thanks to a new partnership with Harley-Davidson Europe. While Serial 1 technically became a separate entity as an electric bike startup after it was spun off as an internal Harley-Davidson project, HD remains the majority owner of the electric bike company.
European prices won’t be cheap, of course, with models starting at € 3,499.
But then again, Harley doesn’t make just any ordinary electric bike. The three models contain top-of-the-line parts like the automatic shift. They also include features that we haven’t seen on any other electric bike, such as a glove compartment (?!) On an e-bike.
At the lower end of the range, the Serial 1 MOSH / CTY is the brand’s urban play bike. The 20 mph (32 km / h) MOSH platform is ruggedly constructed and only offers a single speed to simplify the drivetrain and keep costs down. While it was designed for commuting, the company also hired its test rider to jump it through a skate park and take it down the stairs to prove its sturdiness.
However, Europeans will not be able to enjoy full speed as it is limited to 25 km / h across the continent to comply with local regulations.
For a slightly fancier option, Serial 1 offers the RUSH / CTY and the RUSH / CTY SPEED. The automatic electronic shifting of the continuously variable Enviolo transmission on these models means that the driver is in the right gear at the right time without having to touch a gear stick.
While all models use the latest S Mag mid-drive motor from Brose in conjunction with a high-end Gates carbon belt drive, the RUSH / CTY Speed model goes one better with a faster top speed of 45 km / h. This makes it a class 3 e-bike in the USA. It would be a speed pedelec in large parts of Europe, although it is not clear whether the faster model will actually make it to the European coasts.
All models also use HD’s proprietary battery packs, drawn from research and development that went into Harley’s LiveWire electric motorcycle development. The battery packs are mounted deeper in the frame than on almost all other e-bikes and help to lower the bike’s center of gravity. The MOSH gets a 529 Wh battery, while the higher quality RUSH gets a 706 Wh battery. According to Serial 1, the batteries offer a range of up to 104 miles (168 km) or 115 miles (185 km). These numbers seem a bit high from my driving style, but even two thirds of this range under real conditions is sufficient for most drivers.
