The engineering and technology company Bosch has presented a new charging cable for electric vehicles that are equipped without the traditional “charging stone”. Before its world premiere at the IAA Mobility in Munich this week, the manufacturer announced new details about the EV cable.
Robert Bosch GmbH, better known as Bosch, is a German engineering and technology company that was founded in 1886. Since then, the company has specialized in the development and manufacture of automotive parts, household appliances and electric bicycles.
In recent years, Bosch has developed a focus on newer technologies such as software, cloud services, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Although the German company has previously shared dubious opinions about the future of electric vehicles, it still makes many components for them. With its latest announcement, Bosch would like to support current and future EV drivers with a uniquely designed charging cable.
Bosch does without bulky charging boxes on EV cables
In a current press release, Bosch gave an insight into its new flexible charging cable, which was presented this week at the IAA Mobility in Munich.
Bosch describes this flexible smart charging cable with its integrated universal charging technology as a “world first” without the charging box in the cable, which is often referred to as a “brick”. Besides that, Electrics‘s own Seth Weintraub reported on a similar technology from AeroVironment back in 2016.
According to Bosch, the new charging cable weighs around 3 kg, around 40% less than cables fitted with bricks.
The new cable also comes with adapters to allow for both level 1 and level 2 AC charging. Whether at home or on a public charger, the new Bosch cable can be connected and delivers charging speeds of up to 22 kW.
In addition to universal use for charging with alternating current, the Bosch charging cable was also developed with advanced safety in mind. The press release stated:
The type 2 plug at the end of the cable on the vehicle side contains the components for controlling and monitoring the charging capacity. At the other end, the household plug with adapter houses the temperature control and a fault current circuit breaker. This ensures that no overloading or overheating occurs even when regularly charging at a household socket with a charging power of up to 2.3 kilowatts. If necessary, the security technology deactivates the cable before the situation becomes critical.
Bosch hopes its new charging cable will become the new standard for the industry when it starts selling to electric vehicle manufacturers and motorists in mid-2022.
